The unsettling aesthetic of all the monsters in Still Wakes the Deep, is a milestone in terms of the visual design aspect – it’s an institution in itself for all those interested in 3D modeling & character design. These filthy creatures were once normal beings but after being attacked by a sinister sea devil, they all transformed into filthy, grotesque creatures that will make your skin crawl with extreme disgust. These monsters are unlike anything you have ever seen in other horror games as they have retained certain human qualities about them even after transforming – these monsters have huge personalities which makes them weirdly intriguing.
In an attempt to decode their personalities, we have explained all the monsters in Still Wakes the Deep.
Oddly enough, these monsters are also the main characters in Still Wakes the Deep as they were once normal people. They were all interesting characters who made the oil rig a lively place to live, that was full of banter, gossip and harmless clashes.
All the Monsters in Still Wakes the Deep Explained
1. Gibbo
Gibbo is a shy and introverted monster – he is too pure and nice for this world and despite transforming into a monstrosity, his pure-heartedness and child-like innocence are intact. He could be heard apologizing to the protagonist Caz, for killing his fellow worker named Douglas. Gibbo is extremely embarrassed and doesn’t want Caz to see his disgustingly deformed body – he looks like a crawling meat slab. The guilt of becoming an accidental killer could be felt in Gibbo’s heartfelt confessions to Caz. Gibbo’s demeanor is like the helpless child who got lost in a fair and looking for his mom – he still hasn’t lost hope and asks Caz to tell his mother that he’ll be coming home soon.
Gibbo’s redemptive qualities are his helplessness & his extreme guilt. He is like a sweet, shy and introverted mama’s boy who apologizes without taking things on his ego. You can only see a glimpse of Gibbo before he closes the stair entrance to his floor – his self-conscious demeanor & introversion increased after the transformation. The sea devil that created all these monsters is like money & power – it only amplifies what’s inside a person’s heart.
2. Trots
Trots has multiple veiny tentacle-like structures sprouting from his body like the dense roots of a tree and his legs have become useless now – he crawls with his tentacles on the ship, like how an octopus does on the oceanic bed. The tentacular anatomy of Trots is an indication of his desire for control over others – the monstrous transformation brought out his hidden control freak nature. In one of his interactions with Caz, Trots says “You don’t belong here Mcleary” while chasing him – it shows the classist & discriminatory nature of Trots that he wouldn’t have revealed it otherwise if he hadn’t become a monstrosity.
The personality of Trots is similar to a bully – you can feel it in the way he intimidates his victim. He takes sadistic pleasure in chasing Caz – Trots has the vibe of a serial killer saying “Come out Come out wherever you are” to lure out his victim from hiding. Overall, Trots is a bully. You could just feel the arrogance spewing out of him whenever he speaks.
3. Muir
Muir was a funny guy, he had a masculine playfulness and he never missed a chance to prove his physical strength before he became a slimy, spider-legged and goo-filled disgusting creature. He tried to act like a tough guy but had the wits of a class clown. His jokes were passive-aggressive – they showed how insecure he was about his occupation on the rig and how he kept all his true feelings bottled up. After the transformation, Muir could be seen roaming around as a tall & strong figure toying with others – the transformation gave Muir the power & social hierarchy that he deeply desired.
After becoming a monster, he finally felt elevated above others. Muir is asking for help as he doesn’t feel like himself in his newly gained monstrous body – he is forcefully pulling people to him as he doesn’t want to be alone. He is howling with confusion & anxiety – it almost feels like he doesn’t know what he has become. The monster’s body is triggering his self-esteem issues as he doesn’t like this newfound uncontrollable power that’s messing with his morality. Overall, Muir is an insecure but likable guy who turns into a monster.
4. Rennick
Rennick is the one who manages the oil rig on which the protagonist Caz works. He is a control freak and a narcissist who thinks the sun rises when he wakes up & sets after he sleeps. He has leadership skills but he doesn’t know to confront people respectfully – Rennick is like the rude manager with a god complex and treats everyone like a peasant unworthy of standing in his regal presence. He makes his juniors feel worthless each time he speaks. The entire ship crew is scared of Rennick’s temper – he is like a dictator who doesn’t want to hear anything but what he wants. Rennick thinks of himself as some savior without who the oil rig wouldn’t function.
Rennick’s large-headed anatomy symbolizes his immense pride in his management skills and his ability to run large projects like the oil rig – his arrogance about his intelligence manifested into his gigantic head. Weirdly enough, the only person whose personality didn’t change at all was Rennick – he was a dictator in human form and still a dictator in monster form.
5. Addair
Addair is the kind of guy who thinks that making fun of others is his birthright & gets enraged if someone makes a joke on him – he’s like the typical, strict family patriarch who everyone fears. He has a short fuse & every ship member is aware of that. After transforming, he became the most agile and powerful monster on the ship. He also became extra vindictive & menacing – his strong monstrous body represents his desire to overpower & bully people which he couldn’t fulfill due to basic colleague manners he once adhered to, but now he’s unstoppable and doesn’t shy away from his bully personality.
He is self-assured like every bully and chases you with predatory instincts – The visual of Addair chasing you is pure nightmare fuel. Overall, Addair is evil and has a mean streak about him.
6. O’Connor
O’Connor is your typical family guy who loves his wife dearly. In the last few seconds of his flickering human consciousness, he wants his wife nearby. He is a decent man who has fallen prey to the hive brain structure that is operating through him – he is the most docile monster in Still Wakes the Deep as he doesn’t fight back and just accepts his fate. Overall, O’Connor is a romantic at heart and the kind of guy you would like your daughter to bring home one day as her ‘special friend’.
7. Roper
Roper has become immobile in his monster form and just like others & tentacles are coming out of his body. Before becoming this helpless monster, Roper was a serious, sincere and hardworking person who was very friendly – he didn’t have a great sense of humor and he was very straightforward during conversations but a thorough gentleman otherwise. His monster transformation didn’t change his goodness – he even helped Caz in his last moments. Seeing Roper attacking Caz was a beautiful & striking contradiction to his once gentlemanly personality. Overall, Roper was a nice guy who helped others without wanting something in return – he was selfless.
