Still Wakes the Deep takes place on an oil rig in the 1970s, and just like other workplaces, this oil rig has workers, each different from the other in terms of personality. These employees or crew members have to stay on the oil rig for weeks before returning to their families. They combat their loneliness together by indulging in discussions, debates and friendly quarrels. These characters are like uniquely flavored candies; each one is different from the other, but in a delightful or at least amusing manner. Let’s introduce you to the main characters of Still Wakes the Deep, i.e. the most memorable ones.
All The Main Characters In Still Wakes the Deep
1. Caz McLeary (Cameron McLeary)
Cameron McLeary, aka Caz, is the protagonist of Still Wakes the Deep. He has a short fuse and will punch anyone’s teeth out who tries to harm his family. Caz is a very masculine guy who rages first and thinks of the repercussions later. He is quite an extrovert and can befriend anyone with his exceptional sense of humor, however. Caz likes to tease his friends; he makes fun of Addair to evoke angry reactions out of him. Overall, Caz is an amiable guy who everyone on the ship is quite fond of.
Caz has natural leadership skills, a jokey side, and there’s a braveheart side to him as well – he can take a bullet for his friends; he’s that kind of a devoted friend. In the game, Caz goes through extreme hardships just to get his friend Roy’s insulin back to him within time. Caz McLeary is undoubtedly the Harrison Ford of this oil rig – he gives Indiana Jones’ kind of heroic vibes. Just like other heroes, Caz’s wife is his only weakness.
2. Suze McLeary
Suze McLeary is Caz’s one true love, and also the mother of their 2 beautiful girls. More than a wife, Suze is like a mother to Caz – she tries to protect Caz from his inner demons i.e. his anger issues. Due to Caz’s short tempered behavior, they were having a ton of arguments before Caz got transferred to the oil rig as a punishment for engaging in a bar fight and putting someone in the hospital. Suze’s sarcasm cuts deep and emasculates Caz every time they argue – she comes across as rude but her intentions are nothing but pure.
Suze is tired of being Caz’s mother i.e. trying to monitor his behavior like a parent does. The thought of leaving Cameron (Caz) lingers in her mind but quickly disappears with the thought of their daughters. She loves him like how parents unconditionally love their deeply flawed children – Suze scolds Caz brutally but can’t live without him either.
3. Roper
Roper is the driller of the oil rig, i.e., the head drill technician. Just like his job, Roper is quite a serious guy who works sincerely and doesn’t like delays in his work – he will even walk a skyrope tied between 2 skyscrapers, if it comes between him and the timely fulfillment of his deadlines. He is very proper, follows all the rules, doesn’t like taking breaks kind of a guy – he’s the kind of IT guy who works non-stop, eats on his desk, and makes all of his colleagues look lazy to the management. Roper is a nice guy who only speaks whatever’s required, nothing less and nothing more – he’s the ideal manager material.
4. Roy
Roy is the oil rig’s chef; he works in a constricted working space, unlike other crew members who get to enjoy the rig’s chilly winds all day long. It’s almost poetic justice, in a way, how Roy has the most charming personality out of all the free-roaming crew members, despite seeing a dull kitchen space the entire day – what a spectacular example of how nature balances things out. Roy is a jolly good fellow; he openly expresses how much he cares for his friends; he has strong paternal instincts for Caz. Roy’s approach to life is quite philosophical. He is more animated in his expressions than a TikTok influencer.
Roy’s magnetic presence and voice could make him a great late-night TV show host.
5. Finlay
Finlay is the oil rig’s plumbing expert. She is quite friendly and has a brotherly vibe to her – Finlay’s the kind of sister who wouldn’t embarrass you or reveal soul-crushing secrets in front of your crush. Her emotions are always on the edge. She swears a lot and smokes cigarettes to get rid of her pent-up anxiety. Just like any other girl, Finlay loves to hear and spread gossip with her friends. She doesn’t talk much about herself, unlike other girls – it shows that she might be struggling with either self-esteem issues or loneliness. She would make a great grandmother – you can feel the warmth and candor in her demeanor almost immediately.
6. Trots
Trots is your typical bald guy going through a mid-life crisis, his default reaction to everything is cynicism and slightly negative and doubtful behavior. Another reason for Trots’ cynicism could be his perfectionism and the curse of knowledge, which make him think of ‘5 reasons why it can’t happen’ after hearing a solution. He’s the kind of guy who converts normal dinner table conversations to heated debates about how the economy is crumbling – Trots probably enjoys watching heated political debates on television with a bowl of popcorn by his side.
It would be fair to say that Trots lives in a constant state of anxiety, trying to anticipate what’s going to happen all the time – he doesn’t live in the present, that’s for sure. He has the potential to become a party pooper. Trots doesn’t have a sense of humor.
7. Muir
Muir is the ultimate representation of the love language of boys, i.e., roasting the hell out of each other, playfully insulting your best friends, teasing your shy friends by revealing their biggest insecurities, and keeping a harmless but competitive streak with your friends. He shares a beautiful camaraderie with Innes, the blue vest guy standing next to him. Muir never crosses the line of civil behavior while joshing with his friends. He boasts of how strong he is, but also assures you without getting preachy – Muir gives major elder brother vibes.
8. Gibbo
Gibbo is an introvert who has learned to make friends – he doesn’t speak unless spoken to, speaks smaller sentences, doesn’t beat around the bush, transfers the spotlight away from himself as soon as he can, and uses the ultimate introvert weapon during conversations, i.e., his sense of humor. He listens patiently and then delivers the funniest one-liners, like most introverts who use jokes as their defense mechanism to survive in this extrovert-worshipping world – you will relate to Gibbo instantly if you’re an introvert. Gibbo’s laughter has a childlike innocence, which makes him the most endearing and innocent character in Still Wakes the Deep.
9. Innes
Innes is an anxious guy; he is friendly with everyone and doesn’t like confrontations – he’s the kind of guy who just accepts everything and labels it as fate. He doesn’t have dreams or ambitions. Innes lives his life in constant fear and lets the world bully him. His constant fear has made him a people-pleaser, someone who doesn’t have his voice or even an original thought – he is happy being a follower. Innes gets emotionally overwhelmed quite easily. He cares for other people despite being scared. Innes is that scared child with a brave heart who just needs a little push of encouragement.
10. Rennick
Davey Rennick is the boss of Caz McLeary, the one who manages the entire oil rig. “With great power comes great responsibility”; no, in the case of Rennick, the power brought great arrogance, a dictatorial attitude, and a god complex. Rennick is a charismatic leader but also a self-absorbed, narcissistic maniac who treats his juniors like minions – he thinks of himself as some godsend who is elevated above human status and has a license to demean and startle his peers for the tiniest of mistakes. Rennick is extremely selfish – he thinks of himself as the king sitting on a chess board and everyone else as a lesser piece, born to sacrifice their life for the king.
11. Addair
Addair is the most masculine-built guy on the oil rig; he’s huge and a little bit intimidating. If you ever go inside his room, you will find out how regressive his mindset is about the inclusion of immigrants in his country. He is most probably racist. Something terrible happened to his young kid before he came on the rig – the loss of his young child probably made Addair into this short-tempered, irritable guy who can’t take a simple joke. He looks like a weird mix of “Hi, nice to meet you” and “I am going to snap you in two halves.” Addair is probably the most mysterious character in Still Wakes the Deep.
12. Raffs
Raffs is your typical new employee who’s somehow surviving the first day at the office – you can clearly see the imposter syndrome on his worried face. His body language is saying “I’m probably going to puke” and “I want to go home.” He is nervous about his first sea dive – all of us can relate to Raffs. All of us have felt like him, whether it was our first date, day at a job, or day in a new city.
