We Harvest Shadows Demo Review: It's a flickering bulb of terror

We Harvest Shadows released an introductory demo to give a glimpse of the breathtaking yet haunting world that its full version is going to arrive with soon. The demo of We Harvest Shadows boasts off its serene countryside, breathtaking visuals, and a simmering horror-filled plot which can unexpectedly explode like a volcano anytime soon. Here’s our review of We Harvest Shadow’s demo.

We Harvest Shadows Demo Review

1. It starts off as a soothing breeze

We Harvest Shadows starts off with a rather mellow but peaceful pace. The protagonist has recently bought a farmhouse in the countryside as he needs some soul searching. The misty, pine-tree-covered roads paired with the protagonist’s heartfelt train of thought make for a gripping underdog narrative that hooks you right away. The introductory musical notes of We Harvest Shadows have a beautifully melancholic yet hope-inspiring quality to them – you are going to feel emotionally uplifted when the game begins. Our protagonist has a charming main-character personality, which is extremely likeable and relatable.

Apart from the music & the awe-inspiring visuals, the dialogues are quite endearing too – you’re going to find bits of yourself in the goofy commentary of the protagonist. The placidity of the wilderness shown in the game is extremely therapeutic & makes you crave an off-grid living experience where you farm & live like your ancestors did.

2. There’s an element of an unsettling creepiness

The protagonist feels settled on the farm after a few days. He has begun farming crops, axing trees, building wooden structures, and is basically becoming a beginner-level farmer. Just like in horror movies, a switch flips and the protagonist’s hunky-dory life takes a sinister turn as the house & farm begin to communicate with him through haunting elements. The horror in We Harvest Shadows is more on the slow-burn side of the spectrum. Time turns a bit slower, the air tends to become hostile, and some house objects begin to test your nerves when the sun goes down in the game – it’s amazing how cold & horrifying things become within split seconds.

As the game progresses, the newfound peace begins to haunt the protagonist as the spirits & underlying horrors emerge – it comes off as a terrifying surprise.

3. The atmospheric sound design is spectacular

The shot captured above isn’t as beautiful as it looks & is way more horrifying than you could imagine. All I could tell you is that it has something to do with the bone-chilling & eerie sound design of We Harvest Shadows. The game beautifully uses atmospheric unpredictability & human curiosity to send you tremors of fear by breaking the 4th wall of your computer screen. The creaky wooden noises, sounds of nature, and even the sound of footsteps on different objects create a buffet of beautifully textured sounds that unexpectedly horrify you through anticipation. You’re going to get chills from the slightest odd-natured noises in the eerie world of We Harvest Shadows.

4. It has a Call of Duty old-school vibe

The game definitely has a major visual resemblance to the initial Call of Duty & Medal of Honor games where there was a lot of abandoned greenery for the players to visually feast upon – We Harvest Shadows retains the old-world charm through its use of somewhat simple but nostalgic graphical textures. Your eyes might not shine with exhilaration as they do with the new sparkly AAA games, but there’s a perpetual calm that you’re going to feel with the game’s basic visual undertone. We Harvest Shadows looks like the illegitimate lovechild of Call of Duty 1 & the movie ‘Conjuring’ in terms of how it looks.

If you are from the cable TV generation of gamers then you’re going to absolutely adore this one.

5. The climax really amps up the weird quotient

Just when you think the weather couldn’t turn any more sinister in the We Harvest Shadows demo just then it is going to surprise you with its very first proper scare in the climax. Without revealing much of the demo, I will just say that if you think dolls are creepy, then be ready to add a creepier visual to your memory. The climax is incredibly inventive in terms of the sheer absurdity of the thoughts put into making it. Overall, the We Harvest Shadows demo is terrifying, eerie, and creepily original.
