SCP Descent Review: A Viscerally Horrifying Creepfest

SCP Descent is a horror game based on the OG game ‘SCP-087’. It draws inspiration in terms of the use of stairwell game design & eerie vibe that ‘SCP-087’ successfully pulled off back in its day. SCP Descent leans more towards the psychological horror side of things as compared to the typical jumpscare fashion of horror games. Your objective in the game is to utilize the findings of previous survivors to escape and hopefully survive the shriek-inducing horrors that want to toy with you. SCP Descent won’t let you relax or get too comfortable at a given point in time. We thoroughly enjoyed the game. Here’s our review of SCP Descent.

SCP Descent Review

1. You will lose some calories through pure anticipation

Your heart is going to beat at a cardio workout level of speed while scurrying in the ventilation ducts, suspiciously walking in the echoing underground parking area of the institution, and feeling as if you’re being followed by an invisible, haunting entity that vanishes into thin air as you turn your back to it. SCP Descent is going to confuse you with its docile and harmless world-building paired with the most out-of-the-blue style of visceral scares that it shocks you with. What a ghost can’t do is what the timely rustling of a leaf can do to your brain while you’re sitting on a dark & solitary park bench; it’s exactly what this game does.

You will imagine the absolute worst happening to you with each echoing step that you take, each menacing hiss that you hear from lifeless souls lurking in the shadows, and each decibel of the dreadful & hollow ambient sounds that you hear in this game. You’re going to feel religious each time you encounter the lifeless entities of SCP Descent, in the sense that you would pray to move past them without letting them get close enough to hiss in your ear.

2. An absurdly alluring aesthetic that pulls you in effortlessly

The tentacular tusk design of the monstrous entity is hellishly absurd; it looks like a weirdly popular exotic dish planted across the game in a comically and creepily enlarged fashion – you’re going to feel as if you’re getting pulled inside the headquarters of a secret organization that summons monsters from hell and beyond. You’re going to be somehow weirdly attracted to the claustrophobic & prison-like aesthetic of SCP Descent; it’s not the most wondrously beautiful game, but it does have a menacing, glib and transcendent visual charm to it that forces you to stay. SCP Descent beautifully creates the grim and lifeless atmosphere of purgatory, so much so that you’re going to feel trapped inside.

The visuals feel like a psychological maze, which slowly turns into a prison with a monstrous warden. It’s entrancing and horrifying at the same time.

3. Get ready to breathe heavy

Each stair that you descend while being in the ominous presence of pale monstrosities is going to bring a sigh of relief to your face that is already frozen with heart-thumping fear. You’re going to either breathe heavily or in a hurried manner; there’s going to be no peaceful moment that allows you a mouthful of air in relief. Awfully silent & creepy ambiance, objects being thrown, weirdly shaped objects slowly getting clearer, subtle jumpscares, and the instinctive feeling of being a prey whose hideout is compromised are a few reasons why SCP Descent deserves your respect. If you’re able to complete this game while maintaining a regular heartbeat, then you are ready for enlightenment, my friend.

4. Extremely frightening creatures

You think your mother, sister, girlfriend, or wife has a dark and dominant side to their personality; wait till you meet the feminine monster in SCP Descent. Her branch-like hands, hippie hairstyle, and feral growls are going to haunt you for days. She has a domineering presence, animalistic rage, and a lot of swag that she uses to terrorize her victims. The sheer image of her chasing you down the hallways of a cursed institution will give you ample motivation to get in shape or do some cardio during the weekend.

Other than her, certain lifeless, pale creatures that are scattered around the game, like sesame seeds on burger buns—you’re going to experience a mixed feeling of fear and intrigue in their vicinity.

5. A fairly simple but exciting game progression

SCP Descent intelligently uses ventilation ducts, jumpscares, and high-intensity chases to take you to the next game levels. The game design uses weird items that seem totally out of place, but that’s what gives it a fantastical edge over other horror games. The game constantly makes you feel trapped using locked doors, confined spaces, and puzzles that are instrumental to the gameplay. Overall, SCP Descent is going to terrify you and give you an irrational fear of the dark.
