Backrooms Escape Together Review: Exhilarating Peaks & Yawn Inducing Valleys Both

Backrooms Escape Together is a co-op survival horror game where your objective is to survive the gorgeous yet haunting liminal environments presented to you, all while deriving the most co-op fun that you can with your co-player. There are monsters, intellectual challenges, and nerve-wracking moments that keep you decently engaged in the game. We played the game & found it not too boring and not too spectacular either; it was like a socially inept friend who embarrasses you in public but makes you laugh like crazy at times. Here’s our review of Backrooms Escape Together.

Backrooms Escape Together Review

1. There’s a weird joy in being terrified together

Backrooms Escape Together

The warm feeling you get when you’re whistling in a movie theater along with 100 strangers – you will experience it in the game as well. You’re going to feel weirdly safe and ecstatic while surviving the ravenous monsters hiding in the shadows. You are going to feel as if you’re playing a game of hide and seek with death itself, but the ability to joke with a friend during a stressful time is what makes ‘Backrooms Escape Together’ an entertaining yet horrifying roller coaster ride. The game poses weird challenges that could get you eliminated if your co-player isn’t at his/her vigilant best. The shared jumpscares & victories with your co-player are the most joyous things about this game.

2. It awakens your prey-like survival instincts

Backrooms Escape Together

A deer is drinking water from the still pond at night and pausing every few seconds to see whether the protruding green eyes of a crocodile are getting closer – you’re going to feel the exact same fear while holding the torch like a weapon to scare away the light-fearing monsters in ‘Backrooms Escape Together’. You are going to hide in claustrophobic crevices, outsmart the monsters, and run for your life like a penguin does when it sees a sea lion circling around it. There’s going to be a respectable amount of moments that are going to make you feel dry-mouthed, or anxious about being pounced at by some entity.

The game would’ve been scarier if it was a single-player, as the constant communication with the co-player sort of beats the entire “I don’t know what to do next” emotion that horror games bring out of you.

3. Breathtaking visuals that make your jaw drop to the floor

Backrooms Escape Together

Backrooms Escape Together stands on the firm foundation of Unreal Engine 5, so you can expect some mind-bending, jaw-dropping, and overwhelmingly gorgeous visuals in the game. The smoothed textures of the yellow costume look amazingly close to real fabric-like visual quality. The light reflections glistening on the water’s surface will make you feel like taking a dive in your nearest swimming pool; you can call it visual glory. The video footage aspect of the game adds a strong cinematic flavor to this visual masterpiece. The rust-filled walls, the wooden pieces, the granular wooden flooring, and the metallic textures look extraordinarily soothing.

4. Life threatening encounters with hideous monstrosities

Backrooms Escape Together

You are going to feel as if you’re being chased by a pack of growling & hungry rabid dogs who just don’t know when to give up, while running away from the feral beasts in Backrooms Escape Together. These monsters come in a healthy variety, i.e., from vanishing spirits that thrive in darkness to zombified, mutated monstrosities that look like one of the genetically engineered zombie monsters from the Resident Evil movie series. These monsters are bloodthirsty, agile, and sprint faster than Usain Bolt; you’re going to feel your breathing patterns change quickly when you encounter them.

5. It tastes like a boiled potato at times

Backrooms Escape Together

We are sorry for stopping the praise train that we were running in the first 4 pointers but the game does have its shortcomings. There’s zero emotional buildup in the game; you are going to feel as if you’re forcefully participating in a team-building office activity. Backrooms Escape Together lacks a soul, feels empty and lackluster. Jumping from one liminal game level to another feels forced; it feels like a game that was made hastily, which somehow turned out decently horrifying enough to get noticed by horror nerds. The gameplay feels like a compilation of clippings from different games.

You’re going to feel nothing in your heart after completing this game. Overall, it’s a one-time-play kind of game.
