Kamla Horror Game Review: A Not So Shy Bride

Kamla is a survival horror game where you encounter a bride named Kamla, who once lived a love-filled regular life with her husband but soon got possessed by an evil & vengeful spirit, who made Kamla a bloodthirsty witch. Kamla’s husband abandoned her because he didn’t want to become his beloved wife’s midnight snack. Now, Kamla lurks around & haunts the rural mansion, which once used to be her home-sweet-home. Kamla was your typical demure bride but has now become the not-so-shy & threatening entity that might scare you terribly. Here’s our review of Kamla, the horror game.

Kamla Horror Game Review

1. A delightful sneak-peek into Indian traditions

You get to take part in the holy rituals of India that devotees have been performing for ages. The spiritual protection one gets in the worship of Lord Ganesha & Lord Hanuman against evil souls has been accurately portrayed in the game. You also get a glimpse of the holy book “Hanuman Chalisa” and the extraordinary protection it provides you against ghosts & evil spirits. The epic lines of Hanuman Chalisa used in the game are India’s answer to Hollywood’s famous exorcism line, i.e., “The power of Christ compels you to leave the body.”  Kamla introduces you to the power of India’s god of strength, aka Lord Hanuman, who was known for his naughty & playful behavior.

2. An earthy rural backdrop that takes you back in time

The rural backdrop shown in Kamla instantly hits you with a feeling of calmness & comfort that one feels while looking at old palaces and royal mansions. The crusted walls, kerosine-fueled lamps, wooden doors, and the vintage charm of a rural Indian house have been beautifully captured in the game – it makes you feel cozy and reminds you of the “good old days” that you must have spent with your grandparents. The gorgeous Indian village aesthetic shown in the game adds a visceral, close-to-nature & almost seductively gritty flavor to the game’s horror quotient.

The game has an undeniably exotic and culturally rich vibe to it, which is not so different from the extremely flavorful spices of India that have been tantalizing the world’s taste buds.

3. A gorgeous witch with a fashion sense

The pale face, black lips, and cataract-ish-looking eyes of the spirits & possessed bodies shown in Hollywood horror movies like The Conjuring and The Nun look plain ugly when compared to the beautiful and exotic-looking face of the witch, Kamla. Kamla looks ghastly but still maintains the feminine charm somehow, making her one of the most gorgeous ghosts in horror games. She looks like a beautiful Indian actress who has been constipated for days. Kamla’s saree (a common Indian outfit that Indian women wear) looks gorgeous paired with her golden ornaments if you can ignore all the blood stains. Kamla looks fairly attractive to the ghastly, rotting, and pale ghosts shown in most horror video games.

4. Breathtaking aesthetics of the Indian countryside

The bullock cart, old-school lamps and the dominantly visible wooden textures displayed in the game add a rustic charm to the haunted house of Kamla. You’re going to get a glimpse of the simple life humans used to have before technology took over. Kamla dexterously uses ambient light settings & textures of rust to give a more earthy, laidback, and familiar vibe to the haunted house. The game doesn’t look polished or excessively smooth around the edges like a newly polished leather shoe, and it is Kamla’s slightly muddy textures that give it a distinguishably gorgeous aesthetic.

5. An atmosphere that seamlessly builds tension

The cries of Kamla will sink your heart to the deepest places known to mankind, and the clanging of her ornaments getting louder as she gets closer, will make your heart beat faster than a rattlesnake’s rattle. The sound design of the game has a tribalistic vibe, which makes it even more ominous. Kamla’s haunting ambiance builds up slowly with each eerie footstep that you hear and each raindrop that falls on the ground. You are going to jump out of your chair each time Kamla shows you her bloodthirsty face.
