You Left Us is a psychological horror game that takes place in a workstation located in Central Greenland. Playing as the protagonist, you have to complete a bunch of duties given by your superiors to keep the work base operational at full efficiency. These duties are quite simple, like shoving coal into the furnace, calibrating special devices, and unlocking doors, but what makes things tough is the sudden interjection by otherworldly entities who are taking over your work base and harming your colleagues. You Left Us makes sure you don’t get comfortable for even a second with its atmospherically horrifying world-building. Here’s our review of You Left Us.
You Left Us Game Review
1. A little bit of gore
Just like a little bit of pepper enhances the most bland omelets, a little display of gore in ‘You Left Us’ adds a visceral and bestial element of horror to its otherwise psychologically terrifying world. Just when the atmosphere shifts from a congested, dim, and gloomy office space to an open world, you get to witness the gritty nature of the game. The sophisticated job of operating the office turns into a heart-palpitating and life-threatening situation as soon you see the bloodstains belonging to what most possibly could be the other crew members who worked with you at the base.
The gore in the game is decent, but it doesn’t hint towards a lot of violence, which makes the gore look half-baked.
2. A workstation that became a nightmare
The workstation requires constant refueling of the coal in its furnace to keep the systems afloat. You have to navigate with the help of a torch through the maze-like and dimly lit architecture of your work base. The hallways of this place are congested and extremely creepy, for anyone to be walking alone in the middle of the night. The entire place looks like a super secret bunker that communicates with the extraterrestrial elements of the world as you get to recalibrate complex machines, that display weird-looking frequencies. The abnormally silent nature of the workplace becomes 10 times more creepy when you begin to hear hallucinatory and distorted voices while roaming.
Working in this space daily is nothing short of reliving a nightmare every single day.
3. A Claustrophobic atmosphere that feels scary
Imagine working an 8-hour shift with no ‘getting outside the office to catch some air’ type of break in between, as it is exactly similar to how working in ‘You Left Us’ feels. While walking through the eerie architecture of the place, it feels as if the walls of the workplace are hiding a sinister secret that could endanger your life. Passing through each door or entering a well-lit area from dark, tunnel-like hallways feels like you just got your breath back, as everything feels extremely claustrophobic. The darkness of the game makes you feel like you’re entrapped with an invisible monster who won’t stop chasing you until you escape the dark spaces.
4. A terrifying climax
The climax is where all things begin to make sense. The voices of your wife and daughter that you hear throughout the game turn out to be a manifestation of your fears as you come face to face with a life-endangering situation in the end. There are alien creatures in the climax who surround you like a pack of snarling velociraptors who are eager to jump and collectively feast on their prey. No real scenarios of blood-spilling gore and violence take place in the climax, but it is intended in the way the game ends. Overall, it is an average game that might not be everyone’s cup of tea.
