The story of Still Wakes the Deep revolves around an oil rig in the 1970s and how an unknown sea monster terrifies the crew members of this oil rig, after getting unknowingly drilled in by the crew members. The story has been told through the lens of Caz McLeary, an electrician who has been sent to the rig as a criminal punishment, by the court for his unlawful behavior. Still Wakes the Deep is a survival horror game, that rekindles the fantastical element of ancient sea monsters but with a little blend of psychological horror and exemplary human compassion. Here’s our review of Still Wakes the Deep.
Still Wakes the Deep Review: Major points to consider
1. A never ending game of hide and seek
In Jurassic Park, the main characters were being chased by sharp-clawed Velociraptors – the heart-pounding escape sequence with the kids in the kitchen still lives rent-free in our hearts. Still Wakes the Deep has countless moments where you will experience even more intense escape sequences. The experience of being “saved by a split second,” listening to your heartbeat rapidly ring in your ears, getting a dry mouth out of pure anxiety – Still Wakes the Deep gives you all of that, and then some more. Instead of the raptors, there are slimy, tentacular monstrosities prowling like a tiger in the jungle.
The game instantly sends you back to the Stone Age by activating your hunter-gatherer instincts. Still Wakes the Deep will make your heart race faster than Usain Bolt.
2. You are the chosen one, like a John McClane on the rig
You get to live the ultimate dream of your childhood, i.e. being surrounded by terrorists in a mall and stealthily taking them all out like a Hollywood action star. Instead of terrorists, terrifying hideous creatures are surrounding the oil rig and you don’t have to eliminate them, you just have to survive them. Your goal in Still Wakes the Deep is to help out your friends and serve a bigger purpose at the end. Unlike other survival horror games, Still Wakes the Deep is more emotionally charged and less action-based, but the adrenaline rush of being the “man on a mission” & “lone wolf” remains the same.
You’re going to walk with a broader & inflated chest & notice a heroic swagger in your tone after completing the game. Please don’t act like that in front of your mom or you’ll witness a flying sandal frisbee’ing your way.
3. Hellishly gorgeous aesthetics
The hellish-red color aesthetic of Still Wakes the Deep will make you feel as if you’re experiencing the wrath of Hell lords; it really looks like hell on earth. Broken metallic structures, violent currents of water, a gloomy atmosphere – Still Wakes the Deep looks like a DC movie, i.e., there’s no hope left and the entire world is crumbling down. The monsters crawl have slimy structures coming out of their deformed bodies – the visual design aspect of these monsters will make you reach out for pepper spray, as they look extremely creepy. The aesthetic of a once bustling oil rig now looking like an oceanic graveyard is pure visual brilliance – you’re going to get goosebumps while hearing the raindrops.
4. It has a cult-classic kinda vibe to it
You are having relationship troubles, giggles with the office colleagues, an intuition telling you that things have gone south, putting your life on the line for friends, seeing misery, and going against all odds – Still Wakes the Deep has all the ingredients of a blockbuster movie. The dreary visuals of seeing your friend mutated into a monster, and hearing the gut-wrenching final screams of your friends will suck out all the joy from the rainy, windy, and exciting atmosphere of an oil rig.
The “life comes full circle” moment in the climax is both poetic and heartbreaking – you will experience the cold breeze of relief and the tornado of melancholy at the same time, at the end of Still Wakes the Deep.
